nakameguro's matcha is thrilled to be one of the only brands in the region offering true hojicha

Hojicha, directly translated from Japanese, means 'roasted tea', it's a type of green tea recognized for its smoky, nutty flavor profile and light-to-dark brown appearance. Both unique qualities are the result of it's distinctive preparation process: matcha tea leaves and twigs are slow-roasted in a porcelain pot over a charcoal flame before being ground into powder. The roasting process gives hojicha its signature aroma and appearance, while reducing its caffeine content, making it a mild alternative to other green teas.

Our signature hojicha uses stems and leaves from Kagoshima's tencha (the tea variety that produces matcha) and is slow-roasted at a relatively low temperature to preserve the flavor and taste of the tea.
